APPENDIX: MEDICAL SCHOOL FAVORABILITY TO OUT-OF-STATE RESIDENTS

Compiled by Prof. Stephen George , Chair, Health Professions Committee, and Dean Carolyn Bassett, Health Professions Advisor

The table shows how favorable each U.S. medical school is to state residents vs. out-of-state residents. Use this table as you work with Dean Bassett to formulate your list of schools you wish to apply to.

Data come from the 2006-07 Medical School Admission Requirements book. For example, look at the first entry, for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The table shows that 74% of applicants were from outside Alabama, but only 11% of those who entered that school were from outside Alabama. In other words, 26% of applicants were Alabama residents, but 89% of matriculants were Alabama residents. The ratio of non-resident matriculants to applicants, i.e. 11/74 or 0.14, is the "favorability" of this school to non-residents. A value of 0.00 means the school has no non-residents; a value of 1.00 means the school was equally favorable to non-residents and state residents.

Also realize that the 11% of non-residents at the U. of Alabama are not mostly random applicants from around the country. Some may have attended the U. of Alabama as undergraduates; others may have a physician parent who went there; still others were probably MD/PhD students for whom state residency is less important in admissions.

Bottom line: it doesn't make much sense to apply to the U. of Alabama unless you are a state resident or have some other specific reason to apply.

In contrast, schools like Stanford (0.92) and Yale (0.95), were about equally favorable to non-state residents and to state residents. Of course these are high-selectivity schools, and one usually can't apply only to schools like Stanford and Yale. In choosing schools outside your home state, include ones that have both (1) reasonable selectivity for you, and (2) reasonable favorability to non-state residents!

To be sure it's clear, note that a value of 1.00 doesnt mean there are equal numbers of in-state and out-of-state students at that school. Rather, it means that in-state and out-of-state applicants to that school had an equal probability of matriculating there.
